Specialist hiring behind every data-driven business decisions

Data and analytics recruitment is the specialist hiring work behind every data-driven decision a business makes: what to stock, who to hire, which customer to chase next. When a data hire is wrong, nothing crashes and no alarm goes off - it’s a silent risk. Just a dashboard confidently showing an incorrect number, and someone acting on it, unaware, for months before anyone traces the mistake back to its source.

That risk is getting harder to manage. Germany's broader technology skills shortage has been easing for the past few years, but AI and data roles haven't eased with it in the same way. They remain among the hardest technology positions to fill. The inconsistency of job titles vs day-to-day roles adds an extra layer of complexity to hiring processes: the job description one company describes as a data analyst, another uses for a role that's really data science. A generalist agency running one keyword search across every technology role at once has no way of telling the two apart.

Data & Analytics hiring that delivers

From our Germany Leadership team.

Data & Analytics <b>hiring that delivers </b>

Gravitas consultants specialise in one niche area of the technology sector. This means when you partner with us, you get a market expert who can tell a data analyst from a data scientist from a data engineer without you needing to explain the difference first. Our consultants focus their knowledge to be specialism specific: Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Data Engineering, Data Science, MLOps & Machine Learning and Power Platform. At Head of Data and Chief Data Officer level, that expertise extends into executive search, where the hire is as much about leadership and organisational influence as it is about technical background.

We know data and analytics sits underneath every data-driven decision a business makes, which means the people responsible for it carry more risk, and more responsibility, than their job titles often suggest.

We believe data and analytics hiring deserves more scrutiny than it typically gets. The technical bar is usually clear enough for anyone to check language names on a CV - SQL, Python, fluency in whatever tool your business already runs. The harder thing to assess is judgement: whether a candidate checks a dataset before trusting it, and whether they'd flag a number that looks off rather than reporting it anyway because it's what the dashboard says. A technical test tells you if someone can write the query; it rarely tells you whether they'd have caught the mistake that made the query wrong in the first place. Our specialist consultants test for that judgement directly, and they're honest about salary and timeline rather than promising a shortlist that arrives faster than the market allows.

In practice, that means every candidate we put forward has already been technically screened by a consultant who knows the market specifics inside and out, going beyond job titles and certifications. We have the capability to fill urgent job requirements within 2 days, with a 96% fill rate through our exclusive partnerships and 77% in a preferred supplier list capacity.

Gravitas recruits across the full range of data and analytics specialisms, including:

  • Data Analysts - SQL and Python-driven reporting, dashboards and ad hoc business analysis
  • Data Scientists - statistical modelling and machine learning applied to a specific business problem
  • AI Engineers - building and integrating AI and large language model capability into a business's own products and workflows
  • Data Engineers - the pipelines and infrastructure that move and prepare data for everyone downstream
  • MLOps & Machine Learning Engineers - taking a model from a notebook into a production system that runs smoothly
  • Business Intelligence Developers & Analysts - reporting layers, data visualisation and self-service analytics
  • Data Architects - the data model and governance framework the rest of the function is built on
  • Power Platform Developers - low-code apps, automated workflows and Dataverse solutions built on Microsoft's Power Platform
  • Analytics Consultants - embedded analytics support for a specific team, project or business function
  • Heads of Data & Chief Data Officers - strategic ownership of the data function, usually an executive search brief rather than a standard hire

Permanent hiring suits an ongoing analytics or data science function; contract and interim hiring suits a defined project or a leadership gap. Organisations building a permanent analytics team needs people who will build institutional knowledge of its data model and its business context - that's a permanent hire.

Businesses running a fixed-scope project, migrating a data platform, or covering a Head of Data seat while a permanent search runs, needs someone productive from day one who can hand over cleanly at the end - that's contract or interim. Gravitas provides both, including interim data and analytics leadership.

Gravitas works with organisations building and maintaining their data in-house, at every stage of that journey: enterprises managing complex data farms, scale-ups building out their data function, 0-1 hiring strategies, and organisations mid-way through data migration or analysis modernisation.

For permanent hires, the conversation centres on team structure, technical culture and long-term capability, not just individual skillsets. For contract hiring, it shifts toward time sensitivity, speed of delivery and niche-skill coverage, balanced within sourcing built for pace.

We typically deliver a shortlist within days for roles with strong network coverage; niche or senior positions take longer, depending on specialism, seniority and how time-critical the requirement is. We're upfront about realistic timeframes rather than promising a speed we can't deliver.

but the shape of that demand in Germany looks distinctly different to other markets. Gravitas's client base spans:

  • Financial services and insurance - core banking, payments and claims data platforms, concentrated around Frankfurt's banking sector and Munich's insurers.
  • Automotive and industrial manufacturing - sensor, telemetry and production data pipelines behind Industrie 4.0 programmes, centred on the Stuttgart and Munich clusters.
  • SAP and legacy data migration - modernising SAP BW and on-premise data warehouse estates onto cloud platforms, often alongside a move to SAP Datasphere or S/4HANA.
  • Energy and utilities - data infrastructure supporting the shift to renewable and decentralised generation, particularly around the Rhine-Main region.
  • Public sector and administration - policy, service and operational data programmes, typically with EU data residency requirements built into the brief.
  • Berlin's scale-up and media sector - event and behavioural data supporting recommendation, personalisation and growth analytics.
  • Technology and SAP consultancies - data specialists supporting client delivery work across implementation and analytics engagements

Data & Analytics Market intelligence

Data & Analytics <b>Market intelligence </b>

Demand for data and analytics roles specifically is growing faster than demand for general tech roles and Skill-level demand tells the same story. The supply side is responding to the demand growth, but not at the same speed. Germany now has 170+ dedicated data science degree programmes running indicating a distinct and fast-growing pipeline that barely existed a decade ago.  What’s changed significantly is that these now stand separate from the general computer science degrees, which used to be the only route in. However, a new programme takes 3-5 years to produce its first graduating cohort, and even then, a degree teaches the theory a data or AI role needs, not necessarily the production engineering, governance judgement or specific tool depth a given employer is hiring for right now. The imbalance is starting to show as the roles growing fastest are exactly the ones that take the longest to train for.

For a hiring manager, that has a practical consequence: a job ad for a data or AI role reaching a large pool of applicants doesn't mean it's reaching the right ones, and a rising CV count for a role isn't the same as a shortening time-to-hire. That gap between visible supply and usable supply is exactly where a recruiter with direct market reach into people who aren't actively applying matters more than volume of applicants.

German data and analytics salaries in 2026 vary by specialism and seniority, in permanent (annual, gross) and contract (Tagessatz / day-rate) terms:

  • Data Analyst: €43,500 to €59,200 permanent
  • Data Scientist: €49,200 to €68,100 permanent; €700 to €1,100 per day contract
  • Data Engineer: €48,900 to €66,200 permanent; €700 to €1,000 per day contract
  • AI Engineer / Machine Learning Engineer: €49,600 to €66,600 permanent; €750 to €1,100 per day contract
  • Data Architect: €60,600 to €79,300 permanent; €800 to €1,150 per day contract
  • Head of Data / Chief Data Officer: €118,000 to €150,000+ permanent, typically an executive search brief rather than a standard hire

Stuttgart pays a consistent premium across data and analytics roles specifically - it tops the regional breakdown for data engineers, data scientists and ML engineers alike, which tracks with the concentration of automotive and industrial employers in that region competing for the same specialist pool.

The way people obtain answers from data is changing. AI is no longer a separate analytics tool people turn to occasionally - it's become the interface they use to ask questions of data directly. Databricks' Genie, Snowflake's Cortex tools and Microsoft Fabric's Copilot, now, all let a business user ask a question in plain language and get back an answer, a visualisation, or an action, without writing a query themselves. What makes these tools work is a semantic layer sitting underneath them: an ontology, or business-specific model of what the data means, so the AI isn't just guessing at a schema. That's a genuine shift from dashboards people read to systems people ask.

It's also raised the stakes on getting that semantic layer right, and for a German business, that's no longer just a quality question - it's a legal one. The EU AI Act's data governance obligations for high-risk AI systems became enforceable in August 2026: the data behind these systems must be demonstrably relevant, representative and free from the kind of errors that produce a harmful or discriminatory outcome, with a documented audit trail to prove it. This also sits directly on top of GDPR. When a human analyst misreads a number, one person acts on a mistake. When an AI agent is grounded in a semantic model that's wrong, poorly maintained, or hasn't kept pace with how the business has changed, every question anyone asks it inherits that mistake instantly, at scale - and now potentially without the documentation a regulator would expect to see. The organisations getting real value from this aren't the ones who turned the AI on fastest, they're the ones who'd already invested in the data model and governance underneath it, and that's changing what a strong data hire looks like.

For hiring process, this shows up as a genuine widening of what \"data skills\" means. Building and maintaining the semantic layer an AI agent relies on is now as important as building the pipeline underneath it and knowing when to trust an AI-generated answer - and when to flag that it's wrong, and document why - is a harder judgement call than writing the query that produced it. That's a harder thing to screen for than a certification or a list of tools on a CV, which is where our specialist recruitment services can help.
